How to Update EdgeTX Firmware on Your RadioMaster Radio

EdgeTX is an open-source firmware for RC radio transmitters that offers new features and improvements over time. Updating your RadioMaster radio to the latest EdgeTX firmware ensures you receive the latest enhancements and bug fixes. Before proceeding, make sure your RadioMaster radio model is supported by EdgeTX. Check the list of supported radios on edgetx.org. This guide provides two concise methods to update your firmware: EdgeTX Buddy (recommended) and bootloader.

Method 1: Updating EdgeTX Firmware Using EdgeTX Buddy

EdgeTX Buddy is a web-based tool simplifying firmware updates and SD card management.

Steps:

  1. Backup Your Data:

    • Connect your radio to your computer via USB and select "USB Storage."

    • Copy all SD card contents to your computer.

    • Optionally, use EdgeTX Companion to back up models and settings.

  2. Enter Bootloader Mode:

    • Power off the radio.

    • Hold the two horizontal trim switches inward and power on to enter bootloader mode.

    • Verify "STM32 BOOTLOADER" appears in Device Manager.

  3. Flash Firmware with EdgeTX Buddy:

    • Visit EdgeTX BUDDY in a Chromium-based browser.

    • Select your radio model and firmware version.

    • Click "Flash via USB," connect to "STM32 BOOTLOADER," and start flashing.

  4. Update SD Card:

    • In EdgeTX Buddy, select "Select SD Card" and choose your radio's SD card.

    • Select the language and click "Apply Changes."

  5. Verify Update:

    • Check the firmware version in the radio's system menu.

Method 2: Updating EdgeTX Firmware Using the Bootloader

Use this method if EdgeTX Buddy is unavailable or prefer manual updates.

Steps:

  1. Backup Your Data:

    • Same as Method 1.

  2. Download Firmware:

    • Download the latest firmware from edgetx.org or github.com/EdgeTX/edgetx.

  3. Copy to SD Card:

    • Connect the radio in "USB Storage" mode.

    • Copy the firmware file to the FIRMWARE folder on the SD card.

  4. Flash Firmware:

    • Enter bootloader mode (same as Method 1).

    • Select "Write Firmware" and choose the firmware file.

  5. Update SD Card:

    • Download the latest SD card contents from edgetx.org.

    • Copy the contents to the SD card.

  6. Verify Update:

    • Check the firmware version.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Radio not detected in bootloader mode: Ensure you're using a data USB cable, not just a charging cable. Install ImpulseRC Driver Fixer if you need to.

  • EdgeTX Buddy not working: Use a Chromium-based browser and ensure JavaScript is enabled.

  • SD card errors: Format the SD card to FAT32 and ensure it has sufficient space.

Note: This guide covers updating the EdgeTX firmware only. If your radio has an internal module (e.g., 4-in-1 multi-protocol or ELRS), refer to the manufacturer's instructions for updating the module firmware.
